Fixing Tires: A Man's Job?

Here's a dose of female empowerment. Yesterday, I came across a Girl Power article about a tire shop in San Antonio, Texas with an all female staff. That's right. The manager is a woman, and so are all of the technicians.

The lovely ladies of Treds Tire and Wheel not only work hard every day, they've also found success where others have failed. Previous tire shops who leased the same space couldn't manage to keep their businesses afloat. It's quite an accomplishment to be the first of the same type of establishment to prosper in the same location where others were unable to do so. Obviously, the women are doing something right.

Even amid their prosperity, they receive offhand remarks about changing tires being mens' work and that women should be at home in the kitchen. (Sadly, even in 2012, the idiocy lingers on. Or, perhaps, some guys are easily intimidated). However, the girls take the sexist comments with a grain of salt. And they disprove those judgments with hard work and continued success.

Unlike the ditsy, scantily clad, self absorbed celebrities that young girls tend to idolize, these women are true role models. If only more females strived to be like them - strong, independent, confident, breaking down gender barriers, and proving that they can do strenuous work.
